Untitled #9

My initial ideas about this shot were to capture the fasted passed life we live. Obviously the entrance/exit to a subway station is going to be a perfect location to capture this fast movement, so this was taken at Flagstaff Station in Melbourne. I’d noticed the homeless woman sitting in front of the pillar, but hadn’t taken to much notice as I went about trying to steady myself against a wall to capture this shot. It took a few frames to get right and even now its still a little fuzzy, but I enjoy the sense of movement it gives.

What has also interested me when reflecting back on this shot is the emotional response I get from it… You can almost imagine the loneliness this woman is expressing, sitting there watching everyone rushing past ignoring your existence. The empty gaze on her face does it for me. The other interesting factors are the way that she is the only person in the frame facing backwards, everyone else is looking forward.
