Urban Rooftops

I’ve spent the last few months working on a new series for my PSC folio. The inspiration for this project came from a lucky choice of a hotel in Sydney while on holiday over Easter. This hotel happened to have a rooftop patio in the middle of the CBD.

After we returned from holiday I decided that the other project that I had in mind wasn’t going to come together in time so would need to be shelved in favor of this.

The first step was to scout some locations via Google maps. I’d decided that at first it would be easiest to use car park buildings with rooftop access. On top of this I’ve been lucky enough to work in one of the many towers in the CBD and was able to gain access to the 32nd floor rooftop.

Now that I had my targets in mind the next step was to actually get out and shoot.

I’ve been quite pleased with the results in the short time I’ve been shooting, and am quite sure that this will be something that I will slowly continue shooting as time goes on.

I was very fortunate to have rooftop access at our hotel in Sydney over the Easter break, so made the most of the opportunity and captured a few images on day one when we had fantastic weather.

Haven’t posted a photo in a while :) Heck… I haven’t picked up the camera in a while… at least until now :) Schools back and so am I! Here’s a couple of quick fire images to round of the weekend.

I always enjoy the atrium at the Rialto Towers in Melbourne. The way the light bounces around and the complementary red and green colours coming from the brick and glass.

Back to the Street

So I think it’s time for me to get back to the street. I’ve got one class left until schools out for two months and I’m really looking forward to getting out and about to do some shooting for myself.

My wife and I were out in the city last weekend checking out the Polish Festival, and while out and about I tried to get some images from a shorter POV. What I enjoyed about what came out of these images if the lack of contact with the subjects. No one noticed me firing away while crossing the street or walking up Degraves street, and thus looked right past or not even at the camera. I’ve always found it hard when shooting street images not to grab the attention of the people your capturing so you get some spontaneity.

I think I might keep exploring this over the summer :)

Stuck in the middle

I have to be honest… I don’t know why I took this shot. But I do like the outcome.

Traffic in KL is mad and they drive very loosely compared to how I drive… (i.e. never seem to indicate and randomly change lanes etc) so being stuck in the middle was a little nerve racking.
